Hong Kong has a lot of awesome places to ride; Tai Mo Shan, the Dragon’s Back, and other more local, harder-to-get-to tracks– it’s safe to say that it’s got more than enough choices for every kind of rider, every kind of riding. But almost a year ago, a brand new bike park opened up to the public and it looked rad: rad enough that it made me want to pack my bags and go to Mui Wo Bike Park. So like every wannabe nomad, I googled and found Mountain Bike HK, got in touch with Steve, and booked my day out.
Found in the amazing and picturesque Lantau Island, Mui Wo Bike Park is an accessible playground built with flow and fun in mind. A quick 30-ish minute ferry ride (fast craft) from the Central Piers, Lantau is a gem of a town and feels like the Bahamas if the Bahamas were cooler.
There’s a lot to do here, from kayaking to hiking, and yes there’s a McDonald’s.
GETTING TO MUI WO
Assuming you’re already in Hong Kong, getting to Lantau is pretty straightforward. You’re going to want to get to either Hong Kong or Central Station if you’re taking the MTR, that’ll cost anywhere from 12HKD to 30HKD, depending on where you’re coming from and here we go:
- Head on over to PIER 6 in the Central Piers area, that’s the one that heads to Mui Wo/Lantau Island
- Steve from MTBHK will meet you at the pier,
- From there you’ll drive up to the parking near the bike park and then pedal up,
- That’s it!

THE BIKE PARK

Mui Wo has a lot of tracks to enjoy, from green all the way to black, so there’s enough mountain biking for everyone to enjoy. You want to start with the jump lines though, of which there are three, all ascending in order of difficulty: green, blue, and black. All of the jumps in the lines are tables, so you don’t have to worry about casing any gap jumps along the way. It’s also a great place to setup your suspension (which I did) and get to know the dirt, the bike, and what to expect in the park.
From there, you’re free to explore and discover every track for yourself: some early faves would be the fast, flowy, and fun “Roller Coaster” (lives up to its name), the switchback-heavy “Snake”, and of course the black diamond “INXS”, which links straight into another track “Savage”, that goes all the way down to the coast. If you want the FULL experience of mountain biking, do “Italy” — it goes all the way up to the highest point of the park and back down, the view alone is worth the pedal.
MAXIMUM EXPERIENCE
The bike park in Mui Wo is pretty much contained and it’s a great place to really get the full deal on what mountain biking in Hong Kong is really like. Most of the trails ride back into each other and into the “launchpad” area, so don’t be afraid to just mix it up and go nuts. However, I highly recommend doing the park in this order:
1. Get your bike and body dialed in on the jump line, from green to black and then back,
2. From there, do a few runs through “Roller Coaster”, it’s fun and fast and you get warm there,
3. For the ‘gram, do “Italy” and “Snake” — great views and big biking, and lastly,
3. “INXS” all the way to “Savage” and then all the way down to the coast then back into town.
For “INXS” and “Savage”, you HAVE to be comfortable in tech though– there’s going to be some steep parts, switchbacks, rocks, rocks, and more rocks, ruts, and a whole lot of gnar heading down the hill. That’s about a few hours of epic mountain biking that ends with an ice cream cone from Mickey D’s, and don’t forget to take in the entire port town, it’s beautiful.
