Should You Get an E-MTB?

Mountain biking used to be the secret handshake of thrill-seekers, rowdy rebels, and dusty dirt devils, hidden away in the rugged backcountry. But man, how times have changed. What started as a wild adventure for the chosen few has exploded into a worldwide craze, drawing in riders of every stripe and skill level. From gnarly trails to gentle paths, mountain biking has become the go-to hobby for anyone craving a dose of outdoor excitement. And you know what’s turbocharged this surge in popularity? It’s not just the breathtaking views or the rush of adrenaline—it’s the mind-blowing tech upgrades that have turned biking into a whole new ball game.

The evolution of mountain biking has been marked by constant innovation and progression, both for the bike and for the riders (arguably even the trails). From the early days of rigid steel frames and rudimentary suspension systems to the cutting-edge carbon fiber constructions and sophisticated hydraulic dampers of today, the sport has undergone a radical transformation. Alongside these advancements in equipment, the skill and daring of riders have pushed the boundaries of what was once thought possible on two wheels; marrying man and machine like never before. All you have to do is watch a UCI downhill race and you’ll know what I’m talking about (or head to Patiis and ride the Highway section at speed).

In recent years, one of the most significant developments in mountain biking has been the emergence of e-MTBs, or electric mountain bikes. These pedal-assisted machines represent the marriage of traditional mountain biking with state-of-the-art electric propulsion technology. Brands like Specialized, Santa Cruz, and Pivot have been at the forefront of this revolution, introducing a range of e-MTB models that combine cutting-edge design with uncompromising performance. Local brand Loki E-Cycles has taken the lead here in the Philippines, with the latest model “Hydra” picking up steam in both popularity and upgrades from a previous version (different name), despite not being officially launched yet (pictured).

With a motor to assist pedaling, e-MTBs offer riders an array of benefits that have fundamentally changed the way we experience the trails.

THE PROS & THE CONS

Like with everything in life, there’s more than one side to everything — even when it comes to e-MTBs, actually ESPECIALLY when it comes to them. Nothing in a while has been so polarizing as the e-MTB, you either hate ’em or can’t live without them, and the longer we’re with them, they really do start to make more sense. But in the interest of fair play, let’s look at both sides.

Pros of e-MTBs:

  1. Extended Range: Perhaps the most obvious advantage of e-MTBs is their ability to extend your riding range. With the assistance of the electric motor, riders can cover greater distances with less effort, opening up a world of exploration beyond the confines of traditional pedal-powered rides. You get to see more, ride more, and well…everything more.
  2. Boosted Downhill Performance: While some purists may scoff at the notion of electric assistance on the ride, there’s no denying the thrill of having extra power when carving through technical terrain. The added energy from the motor allows riders to conserve energy on the climb (like in Corterra or Timberland, for example) and tackle descents with renewed confidence and speed, enhancing the overall downhill experience.
  3. Increased Versatility: Whether you’re tackling steep climbs or navigating rugged terrain, the extra power provided by an e-MTB can make all the difference. With more strength at your disposal, you can conquer challenging trails that might otherwise be out of reach, expanding your horizons and pushing your limits in new and exciting ways. Just don’t smile at the other riders when you pass them by, they hate that.

Cons of e-MTBs:

  1. Weight: One of the primary drawbacks of e-MTBs is their added weight compared to traditional pedal bikes. The battery and motor components contribute to a bulkier frame, which can affect handling and maneuverability, particularly on technical trails or during jumps and drops. Members of Sendr who’ve ridden or have e-MTBs have also commented on the added weight you have to consider when shredding downhill at race speeds.
  2. Battery Dependency: While the electric assist is undoubtedly a boon, it comes with a caveat: reliance on battery power. If you find yourself far from civilization when the battery runs out, you could be left stranded without the means to continue your ride, turning an enjoyable outing into a logistical nightmare. You can always pedal a “dead” bike, but that’s not something we wish on anyone, especially ourselves.
  3. Cost: As with any cutting-edge technology, e-MTBs come with a hefty price tag. The additional components and specialized design drive up the cost significantly, making them inaccessible to some riders who may be priced out of the market.

THE ENDING

All in all, the evolution of e-MTBs has been nothing short of remarkable. Recent advancements in technology have led to lighter, more agile designs with increased travel, blurring the lines between e-MTBs and traditional enduro bikes. Riders can now enjoy the best of both worlds, with the efficiency of electric assistance on the climbs and the performance of a high-end mountain bike on the descents, all the while being lighter than ever.

The rise of e-MTBs represents a new chapter in the ever-evolving story of mountain biking. While purists may debate the merits of electric assistance, there’s no denying the impact that e-MTBs have had on the sport. With their extended range, enhanced downhill performance, and increased versatility, these pedal-assisted machines have opened up new possibilities for riders of all skill levels. As technology continues to advance and designs become more refined, the future of e-MTBs looks brighter than ever, promising even greater adventures on the trails.

It’s NOT for everyone, but we don’t know anyone who’d say no to a free one.
