In this candid conversation with Naomi Gardoce aka Nammi G, she shares her journey, insights, and advice for aspiring riders, especially young women, aiming to conquer the exhilarating world of downhill and enduro racing.
BREAKING STEREOTYPES
In a sport predominantly associated with male athletes, Nammi Gardoce stands out as a true trailblazer. Her journey into the world of downhill and enduro biking began eight years ago, a path not often taken by women. Nammi’s introduction to the sport was unconventional– she started as a weekend rider, then transitioned straight into the thrill of enduro racing. Thanks to an invite to a fun race at a trail in Rizal, which, unfortunately, no longer exists. “They invited me for a fun ride and to try enduro, as they were just starting the enduro community. I also had friends from Marikina who were into downhill and fourcross. They saw potential in me and encouraged me to try downhill. That’s when I bought my first downhill bike and headed to Patiis,” Nammi recalls.

From that point on, she quickly advanced through the ranks, embracing the sport as her own. Nammi then went on to join the national team and achieved pro-level status, all while developing her skills and challenging stereotypes at the same time.
FAVORITE TRAILS

Nammi’s heart lies in her home trail, Patiis, which not only served as her training ground but also became a sanctuary where she honed her skills. She recalls with enthusiasm how she got to know the trail and the sport on these familiar grounds.
Her international adventures led her to the Daray Bike Park in China, an experience she cherished. The challenging tracks and breathtaking views left an indelible mark on her, highlighting the incredible opportunities the sport can offer. “The experience was incredible,” Nammi said, emphasizing the joy of exploration and adventure in the world of mountain biking. Very recently, Nammi just got back from another international race, this time in India.

The road to professional mountain biking requires dedication and disciplined training. Nammi emphasized the importance of structured training programs tailored to the specific demands of downhill biking. While the day-to-day grind can be intense, a well-rounded approach includes strength and conditioning, skills training, and endurance-building.
She highlighted the importance of having a coach or mentor who can provide guidance and support. Nammi herself benefited from the expertise of Coach Jay Futalan, who assisted her in strength and conditioning, and Coach Bans Mendoza, her overall mountain biking coach. She also emphasized that having a mentor like Coach Mendoza is essential, as he offers valuable insights into how to navigate the competitive world of mountain biking.
GEARING UP FOR THE RIDE
Nammi’s commitment to her sport is evident in her bike collection, which includes four bikes from Trinx that cater to different disciplines. Her Trinx P1200 enduro bike, Trinx E1000 downhill bike, S1600 Pro XC bike, and road bike reflect her versatility as a rider. She takes pride in her meticulous approach to optimizing her equipment, from suspension components to brakes and tires. Her preferences, such as the use of Vittoria Tires and SRAM Guide brakes, are a testament to the extensive knowledge she has amassed over the years.

THE ROAD AHEAD
As we concluded our conversation, Nammi shared her aspirations for the future. She eagerly looks forward to international races, potentially competing in the United States or Canada. She also aims to participate in more UCI races abroad, making her mark on the global mountain biking scene. Her enthusiasm for expanding her horizons and pushing the limits of her skills is both inspiring and infectious.
WORDS OF WISDOM
To the young riders, especially the budding female athletes, Nammi Gardoce’s advice is simple yet profound. As it makes her happy to see more aspiring female athletes, she encourages them to “embrace the sport, seek mentorship, and focus on their journey without underestimating their potential.” She believes in the importance of enjoying the ride and the community it brings, emphasizing that the mountain biking world is full of opportunities waiting to be explored.

But of course, her journey wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for the people who have supported her along the way “I would also like to thank all my sponsors, to everyone who believed in me from the very start,” she says. She’s also thankful for the love that the federation and her teammates share “Then to the Philcycling, the Federation, a big thanks to them. A big and heartfelt thank you as well to the coaches, my mentors, and my teammates at Fly Racing. I’m very thankful for them ’cause I’m always with them when I’m training.” There’re so many for her to thank that she wants to really just acknowledge all by saying “Thank you to EVERYONE and keep on supporting!”
Nammi Gardoce is a trailblazer who has shattered stereotypes and continues to inspire the next generation of mountain bikers, proving that the thrilling ups and downs of the trail are open to all, regardless of gender.
