Laura Marino’s life has always been marked by breathtaking leaps—not just from heights, but leaps of courage, of spirit, and most definitely: leaps of faith. From the moment she first stepped into the light as a young gymnast to standing proudly as an Olympic diver at Rio, every graceful movement, every massive moment masked a quiet war. Beneath each perfect dive was a battle against suffocating pressure, sharp fear, and the unrelenting weight of expectation.

At 25, Laura found herself staring into the dark.

The passion that fueled her, that was her life, had unexpectedly transformed into an exhaustion; a burnout so profound that she felt like she was losing herself completely. Years of intense Olympic-level training had gradually hollowed out her spirit. “It killed my soul little by little,” she admits.

And in one of the bravest acts an athlete at her level can take, she walked away.

She stepped away from the podium and chose herself instead.

“I want to help people to not feel alone.” In the process of finding herself, Laura found purpose in her journey.

Finding Herself in Escape

‘Escape’ is a short film directed and produced by Laura herself and Mathieu Brulard

It was a heavy, heartbreaking goodbye to the life she knew, but a powerful start of a journey toward something true.

When she stepped away, she thought that diving was the issue. What she later discovered was far more profound and revealing: “It wasn’t the diving,” she shares, “it was the environment.” That realization shook her to her core and then set her free–broke her down and then rebuilt her, because she “loved diving. I love jumping around. And I was also inspired by the people I met–freeriders, from surfing to skiing.”

It made her wonder, “why doesn’t it exist in diving?”

So that’s what she set out to find.

Her journey took her to Réunion Island, near Madagascar. There, surrounded by cliffs, waves, and a new community, Laura discovered cliff jumping—not as strict competition, but liberation. It’s also where she jumped again, as if for the first time.

“I was blocked. I was scared,” she remembers vividly of her dive. “But when I finally jumped—I felt alive again.”

Reborn and Remade

“When I did my first jump in nature, I felt alive again.”

The water didn’t just catch her; it called her back to the light, “cliff Jumping was part of my redemption” Laura says. She no longer separates her past self from who she is now, instead allowing it to be a closed chapter in an epic life, Laura tells us that “for me, living your dreams and the life of your dreams is the purpose of life.”

Through cliff diving and her ongoing expedition through life, Laura is rediscovering herself. Now it isn’t about medals or applause but about forming a flowing relationship with fear, joy, love, and freedom—a different way to experience who she is and in her words “a new way to practice my passion.”

“There’s no textbook for what I’m doing,” she explains. “I didn’t have any role models to follow and I’m building this from scratch.” Laura courageously carves her own path through storytelling, authenticity, and resilience.

And she is that, above all, courageous.

It’s Never The End

Central to Laura’s powerful story, though often quiet, is her meaningful journey with mental health. “It’s difficult to discuss when you’re in it,” she says softly. “And when you’re out, you hesitate to revisit it you know? I’m already out, why would I go back?” Yet she speaks openly, honestly, knowing people should hear it and shouldn’t feel alone, nor be ashamed to ask for help or talk about it.

When asked to simplify her message for someone who needs it most, Laura doesn’t hesitate:

“Life can be beautiful. You’re not alone. And you’re way stronger than you think.”
