Sun, Shibetsu, and Snowmobiles

Winter isn’t something we experience at all in the Philippines, obviously.

So when the opportunity came to ride Yamaha snowmobiles through the powdery landscapes of Shibetsu, Hokkaido, I was definitely all in. To capture the entire adventure, I reached out to our friends in Insta360 PH and brought along their latest flagship action cam, the Insta360 Ace Pro 2, a camera I 1000% had high expectations for—especially in extreme conditions.

Last August 2024, we were invited to become a part of the Insta360 Philippines family and the first camera they had us use was the first generation of the Ace Pro. Although impressive as an action cam, I did have a few “notes” on what I felt needed improvement, mainly the width of the FOV, which they did greatly improve on the Ace Pro 2.

HOKKAIDO HITS

Sendr has been lucky to be friends with global giant Yamaha Motor, and that relationship has opened the doors to some incredible experiences—this being definitely one of the ones at the top of the top. Yamaha’s winter facility in Shibetsu, Hokkaido, isn’t just any test course. It’s where snowmobiles are put through their paces in a landscape that demands performance, precision, and resilience.

Getting there was a trip in itself: Manila to Narita, then a quick transfer from Haneda to Asahikawa, where the temperature sat at a crisp -5 to -10 degrees Celsius. From there, we drove to Shibetsu, where Yamaha had their fleet of snowmobiles waiting. Seeing familiar faces from last year’s MTB tour with Yamaha made it even better—catching up, exchanging stories, and now, sharing this completely new adventure in the snow. After a couple of hours of lectures and gearing up for winter riding, it was time to fire up the machines.

After about 2 hours of prep, we’re off into the wild

THE INSTA360 ACE PRO 2

A trip like this obviously needed to be documented, and the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 was put to the ultimate cold-weather test. Would it handle subzero temperatures? Would the footage live up to the hype? Here’s what I found:

Cold-Proof Performance: Extreme cold can drain batteries and cause most cameras (even action cams) to shut down, but the Ace Pro 2 never skipped a beat, it never complained at all. Even at -10°C or -14°C, it ran flawlessly, letting me focus on the ride instead of worrying about gear failure. It outperformed everything I expected, and I expected a lot.

Incredible Image Quality: Action cameras often struggle in bright, high-contrast environments, but the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 one nailed it. The snow looked crisp without being overexposed, and the shadows had depth without crushing details. The colors were true-to-life, with no weird blue or washed-out tones, even in overcast conditions.

I barely made any adjustments in post, if at all.

Effortless Mounting: The quick-release magnetic clips were a game-changer.

Switching between mounting it on my chest and clamping it onto the snowmobile took seconds, not minutes—something that matters when you’re wearing thick gloves and moving fast. There were even moments where I unclipped it on the fly, moved it to another part of the machine, and then that was it: new angle. The weight and dimensions also make it more agile, I DID drop the X4 in the snow when riding fast but not the Ace Pro 2.

Wide Action View: The biggest flaw of the first-gen Ace Pro was its limited field of view. Insta360 listened and fixed it in this version. Now, the action perspective finally feels expansive and immersive, capturing the full intensity of the ride.

Perfect Shooting Settings: I shot in 4K 60fps, which is the sweet spot for action footage—smooth, detailed, and just the right balance of motion blur. Shooting in the flat color profile gave me the flexibility to tweak the footage in post, bringing out richer tones without looking unnatural. For sheer plug-and-play reliability, the Ace Pro 2 is the best action camera I’ve ever used. Sure, the X4 is more versatile with its reframing capabilities, but for an all-out, set-and-forget action cam, this is the one.

In the middle of snowfall, no problem for the Ace Pro 2

I didn’t even touch the AI features—that’s a test for another day. But knowing that there’s even more this camera can do makes it even more impressive.

THE VERDICT

Between the adrenaline rush of carving through deep snow and the seamless experience of capturing it all, this trip was an absolute win. Snowmobiling in Hokkaido isn’t just about speed—it’s about the freedom of new things. The rush of flying across the snow, the breathtaking winter scenery, the pure joy of riding through a world so different from what I’m used to—it all felt larger than life, and I’m beyond grateful.

And thanks to Nyxx and Insta360 Philippines, because of the Insta360 Ace Pro 2, I don’t just have memories—I have footage that takes me right back to the moment, every time I watch it, what a trip. Next time? Maybe a deep dive into its AI capabilities. But for now, I’m just stoked that I got to ride, explore, and capture it all—pixel by pixel, frame by frame.
